If you're worried about self-harm — for parents and teens
If someone has hurt themselves badly, has swallowed pills or poison, or can't keep themselves safe, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department now. Don't wait to see if it passes.
For parents and carers
- Stay calm and listen. Shock, fear or anger are natural, but try not to shout, punish or call it attention-seeking. Your child needs to feel safe telling you.
- Ask directly. "Are you hurting yourself?" and "Are you thinking about suicide?" Asking does not put the idea in their head. It shows you are ready to listen.
- Make home safer. Lock away medicines (including ones bought without a prescription), blades and other sharp objects, pesticides and other chemicals. Don't leave your child alone while they are very distressed.
- Get help together. Call Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24/7, for parents too), and book a doctor, counsellor or psychiatrist. Have any wound checked by a doctor.
For teens
- If you are hurting yourself, or feel you might, tell one adult you trust today: a parent, relative, teacher or school counsellor.
- If saying it face to face feels too hard, call Tele-MANAS on 14416. It's free and confidential, and you can talk in your own language.
- When the urge is strong, move away from anything you could use and go where other people are.
- If you've hurt yourself badly or taken something, call 112 or tell an adult straight away.
If you prefer to talk to a therapist now
A Mindara therapist may be available for an instant session through Talk Now. This is not a crisis service, but a therapist can provide immediate professional support.
