Managing Burnout By Over-Achievers

Ambition itself is not the problem. Wanting to grow, achieve and do meaningful work can be a strength. The difficulty begins when we lose our sense of balance and start believing that doing nothing for a while is laziness. Rest is not a reward that we must earn after finishing everything. It is p

Avoid Burnout

For someone accustomed to overworking, resting may initially feel uncomfortable. The mind may insist that time is being wasted or that more should be done.

Rather than waiting for the perfect time to relax, begin with a small, deliberate change. Set aside five minutes without a task, a list or a plan. Take a short walk, pause between responsibilities, or make time for something you enjoy without turning it into another achievement to measure.

Notice the thoughts that appear when you stop. Do you feel guilty? Anxious? Restless? These reactions can offer useful clues about how deeply the habit of constant productivity has taken hold.

You can also begin treating personal time as a genuine commitment rather than something that can be cancelled whenever work demands more.

Redefining success

Being your best is worthwhile, but only when you understand that rest is not the opposite of achievement. It is part of what makes achievement sustainable.

You do not have to stop being ambitious. You need to recognise that your wellbeing matters alongside your goals.

Perhaps the next time you tell yourself, “I'll rest once everything is done,” pause and ask: Will everything ever really be done?

You deserve recovery not because you have completed every task, but because you are human.

Prepare Rather Than Repair. Sometimes, preparing for a healthier, more sustainable life begins with allowing yourself to pause.
